The U.S. ranks 3rd in small arms destruction
According to the Small Arms Survey, between 1991 and 2006 the United States destroyed 830,000 small firearms, which made the United States’ small firearm destruction program rank third in the world. Russia ranked first, destroying 1,781,696 small firearms.

guns, Russia, weapons

This reminds me of the account of the Greensburg gun confiscations after the Kansas city had a massive tornado blow through town. http://tinyurl.com/cpb7m9 The authorities forced an evacuation, without martial law, and the townmembers returned to find all their guns broken or confiscated.
One significant distinction between your example and the ranking in the post is that the small arms destruction program in the United States is focused on military weapons, not civilian weapons.
