“Yeah! We’re number 1! We’re number 1” – I can only but hope that this is expressed with a tinge of irony, but I doubt it. We’re the biggest spender on instruments of death and destruction, no one comes close to spending as much as we do, and when it comes to taking care of our citizens, other than protecting them from enemies with MUCH smaller militaries, we’re pikers. Our infant mortality is high, our education system is piss poor on a scale of other first world countries, we rank between Romania and Latvia in child poverty, and on a percentage basis we incarcerate more people than any other country in the world, than any country, to include those labeled totalitarian/authoritarian, and we still have an active death penalty, along with Saudia Arabia and Iran. So yep, let’s be proud we’re #1 in death, destruction and misplaced priorities.

Actually we rank 33rd in Military spending as a percentage of GDP. We have the highest spending in dollars because we have the highest GDP by far. But the per person cost is lower than many developed countries.

Yes, the spending as percentage of GDP has been posted here before.
