According to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2008 Index of Democracy, the United States has a political culture score of 8.75, which makes it tied for sixth with several other countries. Iceland and the Netherlands are tied for first, with a score of 10.00.

According to the EIU, “A successful democratic political culture implies that the losing parties and their supporters accept the judgment of the voters, and allow for the peaceful transfer of power” (16).
