The U.S. ranks 48th in emigrants to Africa

According to the 2009 United Nations Human Development Report, 2.7% of all emigrants from the United States reside in Africa, which makes the United States rank forty-eighth out of 182 countries in that category. Burkina Faso ranks first, with 94.0% of all emigrants from that country residing in Africa.

    Hi Mark,

An interesting figure. It’s also interesting to look at what countries rank higher than the USA. Generally, it’s African countries (e.g. maybe people tend to emigrate to neighboring countries), then Mediterranean and Arabian Peninsula countries (e.g. France, Andorra, Portugal, Lebanon, Oman, Syria) and countries close to those (Iraq, Iran). Many people from such countries form part of the merchant sector in several African countries (as are many Syrians and Lebanese, for example).

Putting all of those aside, then the USA is 2nd, just after Sweden and just ahead of Switzerland, Australia, and Germany (all of these being ahead of the United Kingdom, a former colonial power in Africa). ~30 years ago I would have been one of those statistics, having been hosted very courteously by the people of Ghana for 6+ years.
