The U.S. ranks 3rd in ecological footprint

According to the Happy Planet Index, the United States has an ecological footprint of 9.4 global hectares (gha) per capita, which is enough to make the United States rank third in that category. Luxembourg ranks first, with an ecological footprint of 10.2 gha.

The U.S. ranks 7th in life satisfaction

According to the Happy Planet Index, the United States has a life satisfaction score of 7.9 (out of a possible 10), which makes the United States tied for seventh in that category with Australia and Sweden. Costa Rica ranks first, with a score of 8.5.

In the previous edition of the Happy Planet Index, the United States was ranked sixteenth in this category.

The U.S. ranks 114th in planet happiness

According to the New Economics Foundation, the United States has a Happy Planet Index (HPI) score of 30.7, which makes it rank one hundred and fourteenth in that category, out of one hundred and forty three countries. Costa Rica ranks first, with an HPI score of 76.1.

In the previous Happy Planet Index, the United States was ranked 150th.
