The U.S. ranks 78th in refugees, asylum seekers, and internally-displaced persons

According to the UNHCR, at the end of 2008 there was a total of 3,892 refugees and asylum seekers from, and internally displaced persons within the United States, which makes the United States rank seventy-eighth out of two hundred and ten countries in that category. Iraq ranks first, with 4,797,979 refugees, asylum seekers, and IDPs.

The U.S. ranks 2nd in asylum seekers

According to the UNHCR, at the end of 2008 there were 69,228 people seeking political asylum in the United States, or 8.4% of all asylum seekers in the world. That was enough to make the United States rank second in that category. South Africa ranked first, with 227,125 asylum seekers, or 27.5% of the world total.
