The U.S. ranks 4th in potato quantity

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, in 2007 the United States had about 17177371.9 tonnes of the potatoes, or about 8.32% of the worlds potatoes. That’s enough to make the United States rank fourth in that category. China ranked first with 43480655.72 tonnes of potatoes, or 20.83 % of the worlds total.

The U.S. ranks 38th in potato consumption

According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, in 2003 Americans consumed 63 kilograms per capita of potatoes, which was enough to make the United States rank thirty-eighth out of 176 countries in that category. Belarus ranked first, consuming 172 kilograms per capita.

The U.S. ranks 10th in potato exports

According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, in 2004 the United States exported $72,595,000 worth of potatoes, or 3.3% of the world’s total potato exports. That was enough to make the United States rank tenth in that category. The Netherlands ranked first, exporting $497,983,000, or 22.7% of the world total.

The U.S. ranks 8th in potato imports

According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, in 2004 the United States imported $84,376,000 worth of potatoes, or 3.6% of the world’s total potato imports, enough to make the United States rank eighth in that category. Spain ranked first, importing $236,913,000 worth of potatoes, or 10.2% of the world’s total.

Total global potato imports in 2004 equaled $2,327,376,000.
