The U.S. ranks 49th in civil liberties

According to the Economist Intelligence Unit Democracy Index 2008, the United States is tied with Romania for forty-ninth in civil liberties. Several countries–Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Norway–are tied for first.

    The United States is actually ranked number 18 not 49 if you actually go to the Economist Intelligence Unit Democracy Index 2008 you can confirm this.

    The United States ranks 18th in the overall democracy index score. In the civil liberties category, its score (8.53 out of 10.0) makes it ranked 49th.
