The U.S. ranks 6th in happiness

According to Ipsos, 28% of Americans report being “very happy.” That is enough to make the United States tied for sixth with Australia in that category out of twenty-four countries. Indonesia ranks first, with 51% of Indonesians reporting being “very happy.”

The U.S. ranks second in container port traffic

According to the World Bank, in 2009 the United States had 34,299,572 TEU’s (twenty-foot equivalent units) of container port traffic, which made the United States rank second out of fifty-eight countries ranked in that category. China ranked first, with 105,976,701 TEUs.

The U.S. ranks 10th in economic freedom

According to the Heritage Foundation’s 2012 Index of Economic Freedom, the United States has an economic freedom score of 76.3, which makes the United States rank tenth out of one hundred seventy-nine ranked countries. Hong Kong ranks first, with an economic freedom score of 89.9.

In 2011, the United States ranked ninth, with a score of 77.8.

The U.S. ranks 2nd in tomatoes

According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, in 2010 the United States produced 12,902,000 metric tonnes of tomatoes, or 11.7% of the world’s total tomato production. That was enough to make the United States rank second in that category. China ranked first, producing 41,864,750 tonnes, or 37.9% of the world’s total tomatoes. Just five countries–China, the United States, India, Turkey, and Egypt–produce more than three-quarters of the world’s tomatoes.

The U.S. ranks 69th in approval of UN leadership

According to Gallup, forty-two percent of Americans approve of the leadership of the United Nations, which makes the United States tied for sixty-ninth in that category with Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Serbia, and Georgia. Sierra Leone ranks first, with eighty-six percent of the population approving of the leadership of the United Nations.

The U.S. ranks 24th in perceived honesty

According to Transparency International, in 2011 the United States has a perceived corruption score of 7.1 (with a score of 10.0 being perceived as very clean), which makes the United States rank twenty-fourth out of one hundred eighty three countries ranked in that category. New Zealand ranks first, with a score of 9.5.

The U.S. ranks 1st in non-methane VOC emissions

According to the World Resources Institute, in 2000 (the most recent year available on their website) the United States emitted 19,042.50 metric tonnes of non-methane volatile organic compounds, which is enough to make the United States rank first in that category out of 217 ranked countries.

The U.S. ranks 3rd in human development

According to the United Nations’ 2011 Human Development Index, the United States has a human development score of 0.910, which makes the United States tied for third with Netherlands in that category. Norway ranks first, with a human development score of 0.943.

The U.S. ranks 59th in women and girls

According to the World Bank, in 2010 the female population in the United States accounted for 50.7% of the total population, which made the United States tied for fifty-ninth in that category with Eritrea, Central African Republic, Myanmar, Zimbabwe, Benin, Mexico, Belize, and the Kyrgyz Republic. Latvia and Ukraine ranked first, with females accounting for 54.0% of their total populations.

The U.S. ranks 2nd in extinct birds

According to the World Resources Institute, there are nineteen extinct bird species in the United States, or 17.6% of all extinct bird species, which makes the United States rank second in the world in that category. Mauritius ranks first, with 21 extinct bird species, or 19.4% of the world’s total.
